SUMMARY:International Conference “The Sea of Wine. Alicante, historic capital of Mediterranean wine”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the appointment of Alicante as Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2025, the city is hosting from 29 to 31 October the international conference „The Sea of Wine. Alicante, historic capital of Mediterranean wine“ , a high-level event that will bring together experts from the European and Mediterranean wine sector.\nThe meeting will address the history of wine from its ancestral origins to its current role, with the participation of specialists from Spain, Italy, France, Sicily, Armenia, Bosnia, Hungary, Egypt and Georgia. Its objectives are to recover and highlight the history of Alicante wines, considered the oldest Designation of Origin in the world (1510), as well as to showcase the diversity and current quality of the region’s wines, from Monastrell and Muscat to native varieties that are being recovered.\nThe programme for the conference, which is being held at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), is available on its website.\nComplementary activities:\n– Guided tastings in iconic venues:\n\n\n29 October, 7:00 p.m. – Santa Bárbara Castle: ‘Tasting history’ with Sarah Jane Evans, focusing on great classic Mediterranean wines.\n\n\n30 October, 7:00 p.m. – Casa Mediterráneo: ‘Youngsters with history’ with María José Huertas and Beth Willard, presenting ancestral wines and native varieties that are being revived.\n\n\n31 October, 5:00 p.m. – Cloister of the Co-Cathedral of St. Nicholas: ‘In Fondillón Veritas’ with Pedro Ballesteros and Ferran Centelles, a tribute to the historic Fondillón wine of Alicante.\n\n\nReservations: Places are limited and can be requested via the official website: Congress tastings\n– Taberneros Route:\nFrom 20 October to 15 November, 25 establishments in Alicante will offer tapas paired with Alicante PDO wines, combining tradition and culinary innovation.\nOrganised by: Alicante City Council, Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, MARQ and the Regulatory Council of Alicante PDO Wines.\nDates: 29 to 31 October 2025Location: Alicante (MARQ and various iconic venues around the city)\nMore information: Full conference programme\n
