Alicante DOP Wines
Mediterranean Flavor, Superior Quality.
The wines of the Alicante Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) stand out for their numerous national and international awards and the recognition they receive from renowned experts in the wine industry.
In Alicante, a variety of white grapes such as Chardonnay, Muscat of Alexandria, and Sauvignon Blanc are cultivated, alongside famous red varieties like Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This diverse selection of grape varieties allows for the creation of a wide range of wines: fresh and youthful, aromatic whites, vibrant rosés, and bold reds, as well as elegant aged wines, including Reserva and Gran Reserva. One of the region’s greatest treasures is Fondillon, a historic and exclusive Alicante wine made from Monastrell grapes, celebrated worldwide for its exceptional quality and unique character. Also noteworthy is the sweet Moscatel wine, originating from the Marina Alta region.
Alicante tastes like wine
In 1510, King Ferdinand the Catholic granted Alicante the privilege of wine, establishing the Junta d’Inhibicio del Vi Foraster d’Alacant. This historical act laid the foundation for the regulation and protection of Alicante wines, predating the creation of designations of origin in Paris in 1896. This privilege aimed not only to control the trade and quality of wine but also to safeguard its origin and reputation against counterfeiting and adulteration in other European markets. Today, the DOP encompasses over 40 wineries and cooperatives that produce exquisite wines recognized nationally and internationally with each harvest.
The Alicante region, spanning from Vinalopo to Marina Alta, is internationally acclaimed for its exceptional vineyards and unparalleled wines. This reputation is attributed in part to the region’s unique soil, which imparts an extraordinary flavor influenced by the territory, climate, and over 3,000 years of winemaking tradition.
