Panteon de Quijano

This romantic park not only stands out for its beauty but also for the moving history behind its creation. Its name honors Trino Gonzalez de Quijano, the Civil Governor of Alicante, who lost his life in 1854 while fighting against a devastating cholera epidemic that affected the city. During the crisis, Quijano was distinguished by his unwavering commitment to the most vulnerable, helping the sick and ensuring that the city’s essential services remained open to guarantee the survival of the people of Alicante. In gratitude for his courage and sacrifice, the citizens of Alicante decided to build this funerary monument in his honor. The park’s design follows an academic style with clear influences from the Monument to the Heroes of the Second of May in Madrid. Located near landmarks such as the Las Cigarreras Cultural Center, the Bullring, and just a five-minute walk from the Central Market, this park is an essential stop.
