The Barrio de Santa Cruz is one of the most picturesque and oldest corners of Alicante. Located at the foot of the Santa Barbara Castle, it is characterized by its narrow and steep streets that wind between colorful houses, whose facades are adorned with flower pots and traditional elements. This charming spot exudes the authentic essence of Alicante and offers unparalleled views of the old town, the sea, and the Alicante harbor. Every spring, the traditional Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo takes place there; the streets are filled with crosses adorned with flowers and decorations that the neighbors carefully prepare to honor this custom that combines the religious and the festive, where the picturesque streets transform into a joyful spring spectacle.
Hermitage of Santa Cruz
Initially built on the remains of a mosque, its origin dates back to the 13th century. It was consecrated for Catholic worship in 1271, following the city’s conquest by Alfonso X El Sabio, at the request of his wife, Violant of Aragon. The building we see today dates from 1830. The building we know today dates from 1830. From here begins one of the most heartfelt processions of Alicante’s Holy Week, a celebration recognized as a National Tourist Interest event.
Mirador de Santa Cruz
Located next to the Hermitage of Santa Cruz at the top of the neighborhood, it offers unique panoramic views that encompass the old town, the port, and the waters of the Mediterranean. A perfect spot to relax and capture unforgettable moments, especially at sunset.
