Plaza de Gabriel Miro

The Plaza de Gabriel Miró, also known as the “Plaza de Correos” due to its association with the iconic modernist building that once housed the central post office and now serves as the headquarters of the Generalitat Valenciana, is a haven of peace and beauty in the heart of Alicante.

One of its main attractions is the Fountain of the Water Carrier, inaugurated in 1918 to commemorate the arrival of potable water in Alicante. This sculpture, created by artist Vicente Bañuls, was inspired by Susana Llaneras Rico, a young woman from Alicante who became the muse for this emblematic work.

From its origins as the Plaza de las Barcas, a landing point for boats, to its current status as a tribute to the renowned Alicante writer Gabriel Miro, the square has evolved into a tranquil retreat where nature and history blend harmoniously.
