RUTA

Puerta del Mar

Until the mid-19th century, Alicante was confined within the walls surrounding the city. These walls were demolished due to the city’s need to expand and because no further attacks from the sea were expected. Thus, the city began to build its maritime facade, opening itself to the sea.

RUTA

Paseo de Gomiz - Postiguet Beach

This beach is the only urban beach you can visit in the city. From here, you can observe the Santa Barbara Castle with the distinctive profile of the Cara del Moro. Its name comes from the ‘postigos’ or gates for rainwater drainage that once existed in the seawall.

RUTA

Casa Carbonell

Before the existence of this building, the city market was located on the same site. It was near the port so that goods could be easily obtained. In the early 1920s, the current building was built, becoming one of the city’s main buildings and a reflection of the aspirations of the bourgeoisie of the time. It is one of the best-located lots in the city with the best views.

RUTA

Explanada de España

The first promenade was built using the rubble extracted from the demolition of the city walls. Its first name was ‘El Malecon’, later it was renamed to ‘Martires de la Libertad’. The current promenade was built in the 1960s. It has a total of 6,600,000 tiles in three colors, one of them called ‘Alicante red’, a marble color that is only extracted in this area.

RUTA

Auditorio de la Explanada

If you visit the city on a Sunday, you might find the Municipal Symphonic Band playing in this auditorium.

RUTA

Canalejas Park

This is one of the first parks built in the city after the walls and the San Carlos Bastion were demolished. This is why several Ficus trees over 100 years old can be found here. On hot days, it is very pleasant to find some shade and walk through the park.

RUTA

La Lonja Exhibition Hall

The old Lonja de Pescado (Fish Market): Although it originally served that purpose, it has been an exhibition hall since 1990. From the outside, seems to be an Arabic-style building, but it is actually a recent structure. If you feel like visiting one of its temporary exhibitions, stop by and take a look.

RUTA

Marina Deportiva Promenade

We now return to our starting point. To do so, we will use the Marina Deportiva promenade which is located parallel to the Explanada.

RUTA

Paseo Volado

On the way back, we recommend taking a walk along the Paseo Volado, a walkway built to commemorate the departure of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante in 2008. You’ll enjoy the feeling of the sea right beneath your feet.

RUTA

The Ocean Race Museum

In this same area, we also find this unique museum, dedicated to the transoceanic sailing competition which has started in the city of Alicante on several occasions throughout the 2010s and 2020s.

Our itinerary ends here. We hope you have enjoyed this walk through the streets of Alicante.
