Puerta del Mar

Alicante was a walled city until the 19th century. In 1858, Queen Isabel II visited Alicante to inaugurate the train connecting the city to Madrid. Taking advantage of this occasion and considering that the city could no longer expand due to its walls, permission was requested from the queen to demolish them. This is how the city began to expand. On this route, we will explore the area where the new city emerged in the second half of the 19th century.

Alicante Central Market

The visit will begin in the square located at the back of the market, now named “25 de Mayo” commemorating one of the most severe bombings against civilians in Europe. It occurred in 1938, at 11:15 in the morning on May 25th when the Central Market (Mercado Central) was crowded with people shopping (mostly women and children). We will see the memorial created on the site to commemorate more than 300 direct victims, along with over two thousand others affected.

Apart from enjoying the magnificent architecture of this early 20th-century building and experiencing the dynamic atmosphere of the stalls, we will visit a display cabinet that houses the market clock, frozen at the time of the bombing, as well as the air raid siren that failed to work on that terrible day.

Air Raid Shelter of Plaza Balmis

This is a small-sized shelter. Like the others, it was built under the coordination of a Municipal Passive Defense Commission, which built up to 94 shelters throughout the city, making Alicante one of the most important European cities in this type of construction. Observe the shape of the doors (similar to those on submarines), designed this way to avoid contamination by chemical bombs (toxic gases).

We will walk a bit further through the city’s second expansion area, what used to be the industrial and warehouse zone of the port (now the Barrio de Seneca-Autobuses), to reach the current Plaza de Seneca where the bus station was located until a few years ago. Its main building, now called Hall Seneca, has been restored and features two large murals by the Alicante painter Gaston Castello, showcasing the tourist attractions of the city and province of Alicante.
