A path through history

The Torres de la Huerta were built during the 16th and 17th centuries in the so-called huerta alicantina, a portion of land located to the northeast of the city of Alicante, irrigated by the waters of the Tibi reservoir through a complex system of irrigation channels and dedicated to the cultivation of vines.

This produced great wealth that attracted the Barbary pirates, who through quick raids aimed at obtaining goods and slaves, ravaged the Mediterranean. The appearance of the sails of their ships on the horizon was synonymous with atrocities and looting. Barbarossa, Dragut… are just some of the names that made the locals of the Huerta pale at their mere mention.

To mitigate these attacks, a defensive system was developed that consisted of detecting the presence of hostile ships through a network of watchtowers along the coast. In our area, whether it was the Torre de la Isleta (El Campello), Alcodre (Cabo de la Huerta), Agua Amarga or San Jose (Tabarca), in case of danger, a quick warning was given to the rest of the towers and nearby populations so that their inhabitants could seek protection in the defense and refuge towers.
This path gathers a group of towers, their location, the historical roads along which they are found, construction characteristics, as well as their most notable aspects.

And as a connecting link, a circular itinerary with which we are going to delve into a portion of our history. Whether on foot or by bicycle, we will travel both ancient paths and new avenues. With an almost flat profile, easy orientation and the possibility of completing it entirely or in sections, it becomes a pleasant walk among towers listed as Cultural Heritage Sites, the highest concentration of cultural assets in the Valencian Community in such a small space.
